Rosen meets with the 2018 Congressional App Challenge winners from Nevada's 3rd Congressional District WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03), a member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, the STEM Education Caucus, and the Congressional STEAM Caucus, announced Nevada's 3rd Congressional District winners of the 2018 Congressional App Challenge. Rosen met with Mia Lorenzo, Gaelan Chen, Daniel Kyong, and Thomas Kyong from Coronado and Clark High Schools and congratulated the students for creating the Chroma Calendar app to increase the accessibility of technology for people with color blindness. The team's winning app will be eligible to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol, along with other winning entries from around the country, and featured on the House of Representatives' website. The team will also receive $250 in Amazon Web Services and be invited to the #HouseOfCode Capitol Hill Reception in Washington, DC. The Congressional App Challenge, now in its third year, is a nationwide high school competition designed to encourage students to create an app for a mobile phone, tablet, or computer and to motivate them to participate in STEM education fields. I was thrilled to meet with this year's Congressional App Challenge winners from my district and congratulate them on designing their creative breakthrough technology, said Rosen. STEM and computer science are at the forefront of our country's innovation, economic growth, and employment, and it's why I'm working to improve access to STEM education for Nevada children. My bipartisan STEM education bills, which passed the House and now await action in the Senate, would increase funding for early childhood STEM education, introducing our kids to careers that are focused on solving some of our nation's biggest challenges. BACKGROUND: Earlier this year, Rosen's two bipartisan bills to improve STEM education unanimously passed the House of Representatives as one combined bill. The Building Blocks of STEM Act, H.R. 3397, directs the National Science Foundation to more equitably allocate funding for research in the Discovery Research PreK-12 (DRK-12) program to studies with a focus on early childhood. The Code Like a Girl Act, H.R. 3316, creates two National Science Foundation grants to research and fund computer science programs that encourage early childhood education in STEM for girls under the age of 11. The combined bill is now awaiting action in the U.S. Senate. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
