View Text of the letter here. “The irresponsible failure to reauthorize funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program has left Nevada scrambling to figure out how to maintain coverage for tens of thousands of our most vulnerable children,” said Rosen. “If Congress fails to act, families in my district could start receiving notice of their health coverage being terminated as early as this month. It's time for Speaker Ryan and Republicans in Congress to set politics aside and put our kids first by working with Democrats to immediately renew funding for this critical program.” BACKGROUND: The Children’s Health Insurance Program was first signed into law in 1997 and provides federal matching funds to states to provide health coverage to children in families who don't qualify for Medicaid but can't afford private coverage. In Nevada, children living in households with an annual income of up to 200% of the federal poverty level may qualify for coverage through Nevada Check Up. Nearly 69,000 Nevada children receive medical coverage through Nevada Check Up or CHIP. If Congress fails to reauthorize funding, Nevada could run out of funds as soon as next month and may need to freeze enrollment by Nov. 1 and end coverage by Nov. 30. After Friday, the House of Representatives is not scheduled to be back in session until the last week of October. Congresswoman Rosen called on Congress to reauthorize funding for CHIP last month, before the September 30 deadline. Earlier this month, Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee jammed through a partisan CHIP reauthorization that pays for children’s health care by charging seniors higher Medicare premiums and taking money away from the Affordable Care Act. In the Senate, the Finance Committee recently passed their own CHIP reauthorization, but the committee has yet to release a detailed plan of how to pay for their legislation.   ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
