Roskam received the “Legislator of the Year” Award from the Alzheimer’s Association’s Greater Illinois Chapter this week, at a dinner ceremony outside Chicago. Introducing Rep. Roskam, Alzheimer’s Association Greater Illinois Chapter CEO and President Erna E. Colborn, delivered the following remarks: Today, we have the very special privilege of being joined by Congressman Peter Roskam. Congressman Roskam is one of the strongest advocates for dementia-capable policies in Washington D.C. He was instrumental in passing the record-breaking research funding increase authorized by Congress last December and is a sponsor of both of our main federal priorities: The HOPE for Alzheimer’s ACT, which would ensure that doctors diagnose and document dementia when they see it and expand Medicare coverage to include care planning services; and PCHETA, which would provide grants to American medical schools to expand palliative and hospice care training. He has understood how important this issue is since he was first elected, having helped pass the National Alzheimer’s Plan Act in 2010, which established the goal of effectively treating Alzheimer’s disease by 2025, and the Alzheimer’s Accountability Act, which from this year forward, will allow the National Institutes of Health to submit a proposed budget for dementia research directly to Congress, without any politically motivated alterations. While we have many wonderful partners in both the House and Senate, when we were discussing who we should name as our legislator of the year, this year it was an easy call!!!!
