Congressman Keith Rothfus [PA-12] is leading an effort to protect nonprofits and their donors from the potential negative consequences of an ongoing Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rulemaking. The proposed IRS rule would create a new reporting regime that would permit 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations including charities, religious groups, and educational foundations to collect the personal information, including Social Security numbers (SSNs), of donors. Since the proposed rules issuance, nonprofits across the country have expressed significant concern that the new reporting regime will unnecessarily introduce identity theft risk, force nonprofits to divert financial resources away from their core missions, and likely result in decreased donations. Tens of thousands of nonprofits and their donors are concerned about the real security risks and other potential consequences associated with this rule. The IRS has undermined the trust of the American people time and again. This new reporting regime would only increase that trust deficit and discourage the charitable giving that supports the important work of nonprofits across the country, said Congressman Rothfus.
