| https://sablan.house.gov/56m-planned-solid-waste | $56m planned for solid waste | 2020-08-18 | 2020 | 2020-08 | Democrat | House | MP | Gregorio Sablan | S001177 | sablan.house.gov | legacy | $56m planned for solid waste Aug 17, 2020 The Environmental Protection Agency and the Commonwealth's Office of Planning and Development continue to plan improvements to solid waste management on Rota, Tinian, Saipan, and the Northern Islands using the $56 million I included for that purpose in last year's disaster relief act, Public Law 116-20. EPA now reports the funds will be awarded in phases over the next five years. A first grant application from OPD, totaling $565,980, to form an inter-island solid waste taskforce is currently under review; and staff for each municipality are expected to be hired by May 2021. The taskforce, which includes the Department of Public Works and the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality, will start developing plans for Zero Waste projects with comprehensive proposals for each island expected by March 2022. OPD also plans to submit a proposal for emergency repair of the Marpi landfill by January 2021, and a subsequent proposal for the comprehensive waste management needs for the Marianas by January 2022. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
