Villahermosa Nov 13, 2017 Marianas Variety — TOTAL funding for the Tinian Divert Airfield Project is now $21.9 million, according to the office of U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan. The original funding for the project was $9 million which was authorized by the U.S. Congress under the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act. Congress has increased the allocation by adding $12.9 million. The decision to locate the divert airfield on Tinian was finalized last year with the approval of the island’s leadership and Gov. Ralph Torres. However, the project did not move forward as there were still concerns that needed to be clarified particularly those related the CNMI Joint Military Training or CJMT issues. Torres and the Department of Defense recently agreed to shelve CJMT discussions for a while so they can focus exclusively on the divert project and move forward with the construction of divert facilities on Tinian. The Commonwealth Ports Authority has approved the U.S. Air Force layout plan for the airport which will be submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration for review and approval. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
