The NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program assessment of the Northern Marianas Islands coral reefs covers the period 2012-2017. Coral reefs are critical to the people of the Marianas for cultural and economic reasons. They are a source of food for both subsistence and commercial use, provide opportunities for recreational tourism, and protect our islands from storms. The report highlights improvements made by 3 Conservation Action Plans focusing on stormwater management in Garapan, erosion and sedimentation at Laolao Bay, and reforestation on Rota. Individually, we can also all do more by fishing responsibly, keeping household chemicals out of the water, avoiding physical damage to reefs, and reducing our carbon footprint.
