| https://sablan.house.gov/trump-cut-cnmi-foreign-labor-force-half | Trump to cut CNMI foreign labor force in half | 2017-12-14 | 2017 | 2017-12 | Democrat | House | MP | Gregorio Sablan | S001177 | sablan.house.gov | legacy | The Guam Daily Post - Guam's neighbor to the north, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, faces a foreign labor crisis that its officials fear could disrupt its economy. In part to address the issue, CNMI Gov. Ralph Torres and his staff joined members of the Marianas business community for a meeting with Delegate Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan in Washington on Monday. All agreed that the Trump administration decision to reduce the number of transitional, nonimmigrant foreign worker permits this year to 9,998 was not what they wanted, Sablan stated in a news release. The cap in 2017 was 12,998, a significant drop from 22,417 in 2011, numbers from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service state. Sablan asked the governor to use his ties with President Donald Trump to roll back a further cut to 4,999, already announced for October next year. Trump has had a meeting with the CNMI governor in the White House. "In Congress, we are making good progress on consensus legislation that will ensure the Marianas economy has the labor it needs," Sablan told the group, "but the Trump administration decision to cut to 4,999 permits in October cuts in half the time we have to act and makes it even more difficult to get a long-term solution into law. "Short term, the decision is also very bad for our economy," Sablan stated. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
