Thank you, voters Getting vaccine quickly to the islands Statehood and voting rights Veterans History Project 20th Anniversary Rota Resource Study comments open Medicare enrollment open Military academy nominations open Kilili Time Capsule Opportunities Legislative highlights ______________________________________________________________________ Getting vaccine quickly to the islands A regional approach could be the best way to distribute a COVID-19 vaccine in the Pacific, building on the proven success of the Pacific Island Health Officers' Association in getting testing and personal protective equipment distributed to the Marianas, Guam, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and Republic of Palau. But, today, the federal Centers for Disease Control released vaccine distribution plan summaries for each state and insular area, making it clear a regional approach is not even being considered. I have already obtained the backing of American Samoa Delegate Amata Radewagen (R), Natural Resources Committee Chair Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), and Democratic Representatives Barbara Lee, Judy Chu, and Ami Bera of California for my letter to CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield, urging he think again. With relatively small populations, separated by great distance, and given the need to keep vaccines at very low temperatures, a go-it-alone approach for each insular area will not get the most people vaccinated in the shortest time, which should be our goal. Medicare Open Enrollment Open enrollment for Medicare begins on October 15 and will remain open through December 7. 2021 plans are now available on the Medicare Plan Finder just in time to help beneficiaries review coverage options that will best fit their health needs. Beneficiaries that do not wish to change their current Medicare coverage plan do not need to re-enroll. Information on coverage options can also be provided by phone at 1-800-MEDICARE. OPPORTUNITIES Grants A note to those receiving or applying for federal grants during the coronavirus crisis: The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) may extend for up to 12 months certain grants set to expire between March 31 and December 31, 2020. OMB is also providing some deadline flexibility for grant applications. Check out these links for OMB's March 9 and March 17 memo on these extensions.
