Federal Reserve Bank Chairman Jerome Powell said Tuesday that the risks of Congress pouring too much stimulus into the economy are far lower than the risk of not doing enough. Although government spending is adding to an already sky-high federal budget, lawmakers should act. I completely agree with Chairman Powell that until the pandemic is under control, the situation will just get worse. The President and his allies in the Senate cannot ignore that reality. Read the full news release here. 7,359 waiting for unemployment Congress has now provided a total of $1,980,584 to the Commonwealth to ensure that the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation is expeditiously disbursed to Marianas workers who need the help. Despite having $1,208,653 still available to cover unemployment assistance program costs, 7,359 applications are still waiting to be processed. $3.4m for SVES repairs The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced a $3,447,525.60 award to the CNMI Public School System today for repairs at San Vicente Elementary School. The grant covers 90 percent of the repair costs. With this award, PSS has received more than 21 million in total for Yutu recovery. $545k for coral reef conservation The Northern Marianas is the beneficiary of two coral reef conservation grants totaling $544,578, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Wednesday. The Commonwealth's Division of Coastal Resources Management is receiving $410,309 to help fund the Northern Marianas Coral Reef Conservation Cooperative Agreement to sustain coral reef management and monitoring. And Johnston Applied Marine Sciences was awarded $134,269 in a first tranche of funding for a three-year, $975,944 project to scale up coral restoration efforts through the outplanting of juvenile corals in the Marianas. The project will also build local capacity to implement coral sexual propagation methods as part of a broader restoration strategy. Appropriated annually by Congress, NOAA's Coral Reef Conservation Program received $29.5 million in FY2020. Oct. 15 - Medicare Open Enrollment Open enrollment for Medicare begins on October 15 and will remain open through December 7. 2021 plans are now available on the Medicare Plan Finder to help beneficiaries review coverage options that will best fit their health needs. Beneficiaries that do not wish to change their current Medicare coverage plan do not need to re-enroll. Information on coverage options can also be provided by phone at 1-800-MEDICARE. OPPORTUNITIES Grants A note to those receiving or applying for federal grants during the coronavirus crisis: The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) may extend for up to 12 months certain grants set to expire between March 31 and December 31, 2020.
