This is a good step forward,” Sen. Bernie Sanders said in theTimes Argus and Rutland Herald. Sens. Sanders and Patrick Leahy both support diplomatic proposals to remove chemical weapons from Syria, WCAX-TV reported. VIDEO, LINK Obama Must Not Surrender to Class Warfare President Barack Obama now must turn his focus from Syria to championing progressive solutions to the nation's pressing domestic issues. “The president has got to say, ‘I stand with the working families of the United States, and if the billionaires hate me, so be it.’ He's got to draw the line in the sand... on the class warfare going on in America.” Sen. Sanders told MSNBC's Ed Schultz Wednesday that VIDEO Obama's Unpopular War President Barack Obama is paying a high political price for his support of unpopular military strikes in Syria, according to an Al Jazeera America report. Sen. Sanders "assailed" the president and Congress for not focusing on important domestic issues. “What about our kids?” he asked. “What kind of future are they going to have in a country where the middle class continues to disappear?” LINK 9/11 Remembered The 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were commemorated Wednesday in New York City, Washington, D.C., and western Pennsylvania. “Those events transformed this country,” Sen. Sanders said on Wednesday in a conversation with radio host Ed Schultz. AUDIO Jobs The unemployment rate in August of 7.3 percent only measures people who have actively looked for work in the past four weeks. It's a tremendously deceptive measure that ignores millions of discouraged and freelance workers. In fact, the labor force participation rate last month was 63.2 percent, nearly the lowest level in 35 years, Newsday opinion editor Anne Michaud wrote in a column that cited Sen. Sanders’ concern that Congress has ignored unemployment and the disappearing middle class. LINK Taxes Senate Democratic leaders are facing pressure from the party’s left wing to move manufacturing incentives and other corporate tax measures endorsed by President Obama as part of a move toward job-promoting fiscal measures. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada is weighing whether to move the provisions, including new infrastructure funding measures that would be funded by new corporate tax revenue. Sen. Sanders said he and other liberals might support a corporate overhaul, but only if it included “substantial revenue” to fund priorities, according to Congressional Quarterly. Peter DeFazio. LINK Gay Veterans Legislation to bar anti-LGBT job bias is expected to come before the Senate sometime this fall, The Washington Blade reported. Another LGBT-relevant bill that has been reported out of the committee is the Charlie Morgan Act, which would ensure veterans in same-sex marriages have access to certain spousal benefits. A spokesman for Sen. Sanders, who chairs the veterans’ committee, wouldn’t speculate on the bill's chance of passage. Rank-and-file Republicans had not fully come aboard their leadership’s plan to keep federal agencies operating at current sequestration levels while forcing a Senate vote on the Affordable Care Act LINK Hill Obamacare Rules Delayed Rules about how members of Congress and their staff get insurance through health care exchanges may be delayed by the Office of Personnel Management, according to Politico. A proposed solution to continue offering employer subsidies for health care to staff members is still being finalized. LINK Vermont State Buildings Go Solar Gov. Peter Shumlin announced Wednesday a plan to convert state buildings to solar energy with the installation of over 900 solar tracking panels, according to the Burlington Free Press. Estimated energy savings are pegged at more than $1 million over 20 years. LINK Mylan Technologies Expansion Gov. Shumlin's administration plans to move $5.5 million from the state corrections budget to finance a project aiding Mylan Technologies in its expansion in downtown St. Albans, The Associated Press reported. LINK Going to Pot Gov. Shumlin said marijuana should be legalized in the state, but not right now. He said legalizing and taxing marijuana is the direction the country is headed and "Vermont should be a part of that conversation." But he's not willing to do that now, AP reported. LINK Leahy is Citizen of the Year The Vermont Chamber of Commerce has named Sen. Patrick Leahy as its 2013 Citizen of the Year.
