LINK National Senate Pressure on Fed Pick Irks White House Surprised and irritated to see Senate Democrats touting a preferred candidate for Federal Reserve chairman, White House officials have moved behind the scenes to quash the campaign and are insisting President Barack Obama not be pressured as he mulls whom to nominate, people familiar with the effort told The Wall Street Journal. LINK Deported Veterans After serving in the military with a green-card, veterans who committed minor crimes after returning to civilian life have been deported from the United States, according to The Washington Post. An advocacy group said that at least hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of veterans have been deported in recent years. Some committed felonies; others were deported for drug possession, bar fights, theft or forgery. LINK NSA to Cut System Administrators After a devastating leak from former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, the agency plans to cut 90 percent of its system administrators, The Washington Post reported. The move, NSA Director Army Gen. Keith Alexander said, is designed to make "networks more defensible and more secure.” LINK Obamacare Delays President Barack Obama's administration has delayed until 2015 a significant consumer protection in the law that limits how much people may have to spend on their own health care, The New York Times reported. Federal officials have granted a one-year grace period to some insurers, allowing them to set higher limits in 2014. LINK Airline Merger Blocked The Justice Department and several U.S. state attorneys general on Tuesday challenged a proposed $11 billion merger between US Airways Group Inc. and American Airlines' parent company, CBS News reported. Critics of the deal say it would result in reduced competition for commercial air travel. LINK VA Claims Backlog Sen. Sherrod Brown, who serves on the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, called on the VA to train more people to process a claims backlog and reach out to returning veterans to alert them to benefits they may be entitled to claim. "We have seen some progress in eliminating the backlog," Brown said at a news conference at the Montgomery County Veterans Service Commission in Dayton, Ohio, The Associated Press reported. Vermont Solar Power Limited Washington Electric Co-op said Tuesday it will limit the size of future solar installations on its system, effectively shutting out customers who had hoped to begin generating excess power and selling it to the utility, a popular practice called net metering. The co-op will continue to allow solar installations on its system, but effective Oct. 1 it will limit the size of new solar installations to 5 kilowatts. That decision angered environmental groups around the state, the Times Argus reported. LINK Shumlin Returns Land Gov. Peter Shumlin has returned land he bought from neighbor Jerry Dodge at a steep discount, The Associated Press reported.
