Bernard Sanders brought officials together with employees of the Vermont Veterans Home in the office of Gov. Peter Shumlin to keep the home from losing state and federal funding after federal inspectors found deficiencies at the home. David Weinstein, a senior policy adviser for Sanders, said the senator and Jeb Spaulding, the secretary of the Agency of Administration, led the meeting to look for ways to keep the home running without losing its primary source of funding, the Rutland Herald reported. LINK World Diplomatic Missions Reopen Eighteen of the 19 U.S. embassies and consulates that were closed in the Middle East and Africa because of a terrorist threat will reopen Sunday, the State Department said. The U.S. Embassy in Yemen will remain closed. The consulate in Lahore, Pakistan, which was closed Thursday because of what officials say was a separate credible threat, also was not scheduled to reopen, The Associated Press reported. National President Justifies Surveillance President Barack Obama on Friday released a detailed legal justification for domestic spying and called for more openness and scrutiny of the N.S.A.’s programs to reassure a skeptical public that its privacy is not being violated, The New York Times reported. LINK Email Service Closes Lavabit, an email service reportedly used by Edward J. Snowden, the leaker who had worked as a National Security Agency contractor, announced the suspension of its service Thursday. In a blog post, the company’s owner suggested that he had received a secret search order and shut the service to avoid being “complicit in crimes against the American people,” The New York Times reported. LINK The Fed President Obama said Friday that he’s still considering a range of candidates to be the next chairman of the Federal Reserve and that whoever gets the job will need to focus in the near term on reducing unemployment. Obama said during a White House news conference that former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers and current Fed Vice Chairman Janet Yellen are both highly qualified for the job, and that he’s also considering others, according to AP. LINK Student Loans President Obama signed into law Friday a measure that will charge students more to borrow for college this year than they paid for the past two years. Interest rates are expect to climb in the future. Obama to Address Veterans President Obama will cite progress in reducing the backlog of disability claims when he addresses a gathering of disabled veterans on Saturday. The White House says Obama also will discuss research into traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide among veterans and troops, as well as efforts to help veterans earn college degrees or get the credentials needed to compete for high-skilled jobs during his an appearance before the Disabled American Veterans' convention in downtown Orlando, Fla., AP reported. Bill Signed to Ease Airport Screening for Vets The White House says President Obama has signed into law a bill making it easier for wounded or disabled members of the military and veterans to get through airport security screening. Obama signed the bill Friday, a week after it received final approval in the House. The measure requires the Defense Department and Veterans Affairs to work with the Transportation Security Administration on a new protocol, AP reported. Vermont Historic Downtowns About a dozen fires have devastated downtowns from one end of Vermont to the other since 2000. Sen. Patrick Leahy says he has a plan to prevent more destruction by encouraging building owners to install sprinkler systems in older buildings, AP reported.
