"They cannot remain there, whether in the hands of Assad or the hands of other people." LINK New Census Numbers Show Recession’s Effect on Families The portion of American households made up of married couples with children under 18 fell to 20 percent from 40 percent from 1970 to 2012, the Census Bureau said Tuesday as it detailed other fundamental changes in family life. The share of people living alone, meanwhile, rose 10 percentage points, to 27 percent. The analysis also found that the recession profoundly affected American families from 2005 to 2011, resulting in a 15 percent decline in homeownership among households with children and a 33 percent increase in households where at least one parent was unemployed, The New York Times reported. The claims are based on Begich’s support for a non-binding amendment to this year’s budget resolution by Sen. LINK Vernon Worried About Plant Closing By early afternoon Tuesday, Nesbitt’s Portside Tavern in Vernon, Vt., was crammed with workers from the nearby Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. Hours earlier, the workers had been told the plant would close next year, an announcement few expected. Released early for the day, they stopped at the restaurant and pub on the banks of the Connecticut River to sip beers and talk about the future. Don Rosinski, a Vernon resident who does not work at the plant, said that the closure would have huge ripple effects. Everybody in the small town knows someone who works at Vermont Yankee. “Just in my neighborhood alone, there are six families,” Rosinski told The Boston Globe. “One just sent their third kid to college.
