LINK World U.S., Russia Agree on Syrian Chemical Weapons The United States and Russia agreed Saturday on a plan to bring Syrian chemical weapons under international control, a rare diplomatic victory in a brutal civil war that appears to head off a punitive U.S. military strike on Syria in the near future. In announcing the deal, Secretary of State John F. Kerry and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, said the agreement would be backed by a U.N. Security Council resolution that could allow for sanctions or other consequences if Syria fails to comply,The Washington Post reported from Geneva. LINK National The Fed The chances that Larry H. Summers, said to be President Barack Obama’s favored candidate to replace Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, would win confirmation are falling sharply as Democrats come out against the possible nomination of the former Treasury Secretary. Jon Tester would vote against Summers in committee if the president nominated him, his office said on Friday. Earlier, another Banking Democrat, Sen. Sherrod Brown, told CQ Roll Call he would “likely” vote against Summers’ nomination in committee. Sen. Jeff Merkley is a likely “no” vote as well. LINK Vermont Pentagon Considers Vermont for Missile Defense Site The Vermont congressional delegation’s opposition to basing a missile defense site is Jericho is inconsistent with its support for basing F-35 fighter jets in Vermont because both would will bring jobs, South Burlington City Council member Rosanne Greco said on Vermont Public Television. “It’s unlikely this will ever happen.
