Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today announced $448,345 in federal funding to improve environmental education opportunities for Baltimore students. The new funding comes from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Chesapeake Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) grant program. It will support Towson University's Harbor Scholars Professional Learning Workshop, a program that trains fifth-grade science teachers at Baltimore City Public Schools to provide their students with hands-on environmental learning activities and build long-lasting ties between students and the Chesapeake Bay. This important investment in Baltimore teachers will help strengthen environmental education and engage our students with unique and meaningful experiences that deepen their connection to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, said Congressman Sarbanes, a leading proponent in Congress for environmental education. By offering students the opportunity to get outside and learn firsthand about protecting the health of the Bay, we can inspire Maryland's next generation of environmental stewards.
