Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today introduced the 21st Century Power Grid Act (H.R. 4206), a bill that would make Americas electric grid more efficient and secure. The legislation would empower the Department of Energy to support projects that improve grid performance and security through grant making and cooperative agreements. This includes the research, development and deployment of digital technologies, advanced communications and control systems, distributed energy resources, more resilient grid infrastructure, strengthened cybersecurity defenses and cost-saving mechanisms for consumers. Todays electric grid is outmoded and obsolete, making consumers vulnerable to higher utility prices and leaving us defenseless against the threat of cyberattack, said Congressman Sarbanes. Thats why improving grid reliability, flexibility, efficiency and security must be a top priority for this nation. Modernizing our electric grid is a win-win-win for consumers, for utilities and for the country as a whole. Its past time for us to upgrade our electric grid to meet current energy demands and security threats to our infrastructure, said Rep. Jerry McNerney. Modernization starts with funding innovative research and development of new technologies that boost reliability and efficiency, and promote better protection against cyber threats.
