During a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing today, Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) underscored the critical importance of ensuring that the 2020 Census conducts a fair and accurate count and that it remains free from political interference and partisan ploys. Fundamentally, the census is about giving every person in this country the opportunity to stand up and to be counted, said Congressman Sarbanes. And if you don't have that kind of accuracy at the census tract level you can have a situation where the voice of some people and some neighborhoods and some communities is being given more weight than the voices of other communities and other individuals in our country. Sarbanes continued: And so, you can perpetuate some of the unfairness and imbalance distribution of sort of political power and voice across that country that already exists in so many ways. The census ought to be combating that unfairness, making sure that everybody's voice is given equal weight. Sarbanes concluded: That's why it's so critical, Madam Chair, that the accuracy and transparency and integrity of this process be protected.
