Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today joined U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, along with Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger, Steny H. Hoyer, Elijah E. Cummings, Andy P. Harris, M.D., John K. Delaney, Anthony G. Brown and Jamie B. Raskin in announcing that the Port of Baltimore will receive a $6,554,575 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to improve Baltimore's shipping capacity. The federal funding will help the Maryland Port Authority construct a second berth capable of serving ultra large container ships and cargo, as part of the Port of Baltimore's Seagirt Marine Terminal modernization project. The expanded wharf will dramatically increase Baltimore's shipping volume and bring added economic opportunities and jobs to Maryland. This new infusion of federal grant funding for the Port of Baltimore will improve the long-term health of Baltimore's economy and increase job opportunities for hardworking Marylanders, said Congressman Sarbanes. By continuing to invest in the Port of Baltimore, we can ensure that it remains a competitive economic engine for our state, paying dividends for Baltimore's workforce and resulting in positive commercial impacts across Maryland. Grant funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program. In July, the Maryland Congressional Delegation sent a letter to Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao requesting that the Maryland Port Authority be fully considered for a grant. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
