Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today released the following statement about receiving the COVID-19 vaccine: Following the advice of the Office of the Attending Physician, and based on government continuity guidelines, I recently received the COVID-19 vaccine. I know that some Marylanders including health care workers, first responders and nursing home residents, who are among the first individuals eligible for the vaccine may be apprehensive about receiving it. I want to reiterate for them and others my full confidence in the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine. According to public health professionals, it is not yet clear whether someone who has been vaccinated and is protected from the virus can nevertheless still be a carrier. That is why for the safety of my family members, who are not yet eligible to receive the vaccine, and for others who I come into contact with I will continue to maintain all the recommended precautions, including wearing a mask, washing my hands and practicing social distancing. I greatly value the guidance of the scientific community and our outstanding public health experts.
