The bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives – with Congressman Sarbanes’ support – on November 30 by a vote of 392 to 26 and passed the U.S. Senate on December 7 by a vote of 94 to 5. “The 21st Century Cures Act is landmark legislation that will provide critical funding to the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration – two Maryland-based institutions that drive our nation’s medical research and innovation. Funding contained in this bill will allow both agencies to modernize clinical trials, support the development of new drugs and devices, speed up drug and device approvals, invest in new science like precision medicine and help young scientists begin their careers in research. “In all, these improvements will help expand access to life-saving treatments, especially for patients with rare diseases. “With that said, the 21st Century Cures Act is not a perfect bill. Along with my colleagues on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, we have worked two years to craft the final version of this legislation. However, I am deeply concerned that the final product does not contain guaranteed funding. Moving forward, I will do everything possible to encourage the Republican-led Appropriations Committee to live up to the funding promises contained in this bill.
