Congressman Sarbanes authored the legislation creating the PSLF program, which became law as part of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act in 2007. By a vote of 19-20, Republicans voted down a bipartisan amendment to H.R. 4508, the PROSPER Act, that would have protected the PSLF program and expanded it to cover farmers, ranchers, veterans and military service organizations. “The failure of this crucial amendment represents an unnecessary and senseless attack on a bipartisan student loan forgiveness program designed to help our nation’s service members, community health care workers, teachers, public defenders, social workers and other public servants,” said Congressman Sarbanes, the author of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness law. “I will continue to fight to protect PSLF as this bill moves forward.
