Giveaways to Wall Street 2016-12-01 2016 2016-12 Democrat House MD John Sarbanes S001168 sarbanes.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement after the Republican-controlled Congress passed the Systemic Risk Designation Improvement Act of 2016 (H.R. 6392), a bill that further erodes Wall Street oversight, and after President-elect Donald J. Trump announced the nomination of former Goldman Sachs partner and hedge fund manager Steven Mnuchin for Treasury Secretary: “If one thing is clear from the recent election, it’s that Americans of all stripes are fed up with business as usual in Washington. Most Americans want to create an economy that works for everyone and a democracy where every voice is heard. The G.O.P.’s consistent attempts to strip away the safeguards put in place to prevent another financial crisis and President-elect Trump’s appointment of Steven Mnuchin to be our nation’s chief financial watchdog shows that the message hasn’t been received. “For years, the Republican Party has sought to tear down effective oversight of Wall Street. And today, the Republican-controlled House voted to suspend critical risk controls for some of the nation’s largest financial institutions – making the prospect of another taxpayer bank bailout more likely. “In addition, President-elect Trump has nominated Steven Mnuchin – an elite Wall Street insider who personally profited from the financial ruin of hardworking Americans during the financial crisis of 2008. The nomination of Steven Mnuchin is a blatant departure from President-Elect Trump’s promise to “drain the swamp” and should offend President-elect Trump’s supporters and detractors alike. “Unfortunately, the nomination of Mr. Mnuchin and the passage of H.R. 6392 should come as no surprise – giveaways to Wall Street are par for the course in the Republican Party.” ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
