https://schakowsky.house.gov/index.cfm?sectionid=25&itemid=3594 Schakowsky statement on President Trump's announcement on Jerusalem 2017-12-06 2017 2017-12 Democrat House IL Jan Schakowsky S001145 schakowsky.house.gov     legacy Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement after President Trump announced his decision to relocate the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem: "President Trump’s announcement today ignores reality and the consequences of an action that breaks with long-time U.S. policy held by both Republican and Democratic Administrations. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, but taking this step outside of the framework of a final status agreement derails the peace process, jeopardizes our ability to help broker an agreement, and creates the likelihood of more violence in the region.  There is reason that virtually all of our allies have urged us not to take this step. I continue to believe that the only path to sustainable peace is a two-state solution that allows Israelis and Palestinians to live side-by-side with economic prosperity and security. President Trump’s action has made that much more difficult to achieve." 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
