Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Deputy Chair of the Congressional Pro Choice Caucus, released the following statement in response to a new final rule announced by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that would make it harder for health insurance to cover abortion care, create consumer confusion, and push abortion coverage further out of reach for many. Denying access to abortion care puts people's health and lives in danger and infringes on their basic human rights, said Congresswoman Schakowsky. Earlier this year, over 170 of my colleagues and I sent a clear message to the Trump Administration about this restrictive rule: hands off our health care. Today, the Administration ignored our calls and took another step in their crusade to dismantle reproductive health care. But we will not go back and Democrats will not stand by. We will keep fighting to protect your right to safe and legal abortion care. The Trump Administration's rule would impose unnecessary and onerous burdens on insurers and consumers with the ultimate goal of eliminating abortion coverage in the Affordable Care Act marketplace and denying consumers their right to comprehensive health insurance. This rule would, for example, require that insurance companies send a separate bill for abortion care and require consumers to pay a separate bill from their premium for abortion care. The rule could impact as many as three million people across the United States. In January, Congresswoman Schakowsky led over 170 House Democrats in sending a letter to Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar criticizing this rule after it was first proposed. Women have the right to make their own decisions about their reproductive health. Barriers to abortion care force women to delay care, resulting in unintended pregnancies and unplanned births, which often times force families deeper into poverty, wrote Congresswoman Schakowsky and her colleagues. For these aforementioned reasons, along with the fact that abortion care is health care, we oppose this rule and urge you to withdraw it immediately before it has the opportunity to cause harm to Americans across the country.
