Scholten S001221 scholten.house.gov scholten https://scholten.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper WASHINGTON, DC – This week, Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (D-MI-03) authored six amendments that passed in the House as part of the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The amendments address child care access for military families, servicemember health and safety, workforce shortages in defense-adjacent industries, and next-generation manufacturing and materials research. “If Congress is willing to spend hundreds of billions on new wars, we have a responsibility to invest in the servicemembers and veterans who bear the cost,” said Congresswoman Scholten. “My amendments do exactly that—delivering affordable child care for military families, better care for traumatic brain injuries, and critical investments in our defense workforce. I’ll keep working to get these commonsense proposals signed into law.” The NDAA sets policy and funding priorities for the Department of Defense each year. The amendments introduced by the Congresswoman would: Expand access to child care for military families. Improve the diagnosis and treatment of blast-related brain injuries. Explore innovative medical technologies that could reduce recovery times for servicemembers. Address shortages in the aviation maintenance workforce. Strengthen domestic tool and die manufacturing capabilities. Study next-generation vessel materials to improve durability and readiness. In addition to Congresswoman Scholten’s bipartisan amendments, the NDAA includes several priorities House Democrats secured, including pay raises for servicemembers, stronger support for military families, and protections for the defense workforce. However, the legislation also authorizes historically high levels of defense spending tied to the Trump Administration’s war with Iran and is paired with the SAVE Act, a partisan and restrictive voting measure. Since the NDAA requires further improvements to strengthen its support for servicemembers, veterans, and military families while advancing responsible national security priorities, Congresswoman Scholten voted against the House-passed bill. She will advocate for the continued inclusion of her amendments and beneficial changes to the bill as it moves to the Senate for consideration. ### 1 2026-07-28T07:37:32Z 2026-07-28T07:38:50Z
