This bill would have cut discretionary spending by 30% while protecting Medicare, Social Security, defense and veterans’ funding. The package also included the strongest border security policies in decades, and established a bipartisan debt commission that I’ve worked on for years to address our nation’s fiscal health. “Unfortunately, 21 Republicans voted with the Democrats to defeat this package. As a result, a package that included higher spending levels negotiated by the Left passed the House in spite of the fact that our financial wheels are coming off the rails. With government borrowing close to $2.3 trillion in Fiscal Year 2023 alone, I could not vote for this package and allow the death spiral to continue unimpeded.
