Sean Patrick Maloney's (NY-18)provision permanently banning the establishment of new anchorages for oil barges on the lower Hudson River. The annual defense legislation also includes legislation led by Rep. Maloney to make U.S. Military Service Academies more transparent and equitable for cadets, and legislation to ensure the Coast Guard is prepared to respond to the threat of climate change. I'm proud that my bills and amendments were include in this year's bipartisan defense package. In addition to the bills I authored focused on strengthening the Hudson Valley, our Service Academies, and the Coast Guard, this package will give our troops the pay raise they deserve and improve military housing, saidRep. Sean Patrick Maloney. We must keep our country safe and continue our commitment to support America's servicemembers, cadets, military families, and veterans. ICYMI: TheNDAAincludes the Coast Guard Reauthorization Act, which includes Rep. Maloney's provision permanently banning the establishment of new anchorages for oil barges on the lower Hudson River, from Yonkers to Kingston. More on that provision can be foundhere. Representative Maloney also authored an amendment aimed at creating more transparency within Military Service Academies in regard to equal opportunity of all cadets. The amendment will require Service Academies to submit a report to the Armed Services Committee of both the House and Senate that shows the number of equal opportunity claims filed at Service Academies during 2019 and 2020, as well as the results of a climate survey of cadets or midshipmen, and an analysis of programs designed to improve the climate of Service Academies. TheNDAAalso includes Rep. Maloney's bill requiring the Coast Guard to assemble a report on the effects of Climate Change on Coast Guard facilities and operations. The bill will require the Commandant of the Coast Guard to assemble a report within one year identifying which of its installations are most vulnerable to threats posed by climate change, including rising sea levels and increased flooding. The report would also include recommendations regarding possible methods to mitigate these threats. Additionally, the legislation would require the report to assess how the effects that increasing humanitarian needs resulting from climate change would impact the Guard's mission, and methods of mitigating these growing demands. The bipartisanNational Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)will strengthen our national security, protect the safety of our troops, and advances American values of inclusion and diversity in our Armed Forces. TheNDAAincludes provisions to provide a 3.0 percent pay raise for our troops, authorize hazardous duty pay for service members, ensure paid parental leave is extended to all federal employees and address the shortage of child care for military families, clean up and improve water and housing for military families including the protecting military members and families from PFAS, and authorize new funds for military projects. The bill will also create an independent commission to make binding recommendations on modifying or removing all names, symbols, and displays that honor the Confederacy or any person who served voluntarily with the Confederacy. Rep. Maloney serves on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, and is the Chair of the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation.
