Sewell Statement on Special Counsel Indictments and Plea 2017-10-30 2017 2017-10 Democrat House AL Terri Sewell S001185 sewell.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Monday, former Trump campaign officials Paul Manafort and Rick Gates were formally indicted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for charges including a money laundering scheme, undisclosed work performed for pro-Russian leaders and political parties in Ukraine, as well as other crimes. Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL), a Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, releases the following statement: “The indictments issued today for Paul Manafort and Rick Gates, as well as news of George Papadopoulos’s prior guilty plea, have serious consequences for the ongoing investigations being conducted by the Special Counsel and by Congress. As these charges open up new lines of inquiry, it is important for Congress to hear directly from Manafort, Gates, and Papadopoulos to ensure we have all the facts. While the White House response to this emerging information has been combative, it is incumbent on Congress to act in a nonpartisan fashion and to ensure the independence of our investigation and that of the Special Counsel. On the Intelligence Committee, we have a responsibility to follow the facts wherever they lead, and our ongoing investigation must work to guarantee that the integrity of our democracy is never again compromised by foreign adversaries.” ### Rep. Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) is serving her fourth term representing Alabama’s 7th Congressional district. She sits on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and was recently appointed to the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. Sewell is a Chief Deputy Whip and serves on the prestigious Steering and Policy Committee of the Democratic Caucus. She is also a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, and serves as Vice Chair of the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus, and Vice Chair of Outreach for the New Democrat Coalition. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
