Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement after the House overwhelmingly passed the Senate's version of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The House passed the bipartisan version of the Senate bill after it failed to pass the partisan and discriminatory proposal put forth by House Republicans. Since 1994, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) has provided critically important protections for women in the face of domestic violence and abuse. I am proud to be a part of the bipartisan majority of the House that joined the Senate today in reaffirming our commitment to women and families across this nation. We have strengthened this landmark law which extends protections to LGBT Americans, Native Americans and immigrants. It is imperative that we ensure the protection and security of all women.
