Sewell (AL-7) released the following statement in recognition of National Black History Month: During Black History Month, we celebrate the extraordinary contributions and accomplishments African Americans have made to this nation and the world. As the first African American Congresswoman elected from Alabama, I know I stand on the shoulders of so many freedom fighters who courageously fought, bled and died so Alabama and this nation could uphold its ideals of equality and justice for all. The theme for National Black History Month this year is 'At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington.' We give special recognition of two monumental landmarks in American history: the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. Both events are significant in our nation's history because they tested the strength of our democracy. Through the struggle for equality and justice, we learn that the price of freedom is not free. America paid a hefty price for the freedoms we all enjoy today.
