"Federal investments like this are critical in rural communities where the capital costs of major infrastructure projects would be all but impossible to finance through other means, Shimkus said. I applaud Greenville, Ashemore, and the EJ Water Cooperative on their successful loan applications." Through USDA, Greenville will receive a low-interest $14.2 million loan to build a new water treatment plant. The city's existing plant was built in 1969 and has reached the end of its useful life. "The needed new Water Treatment Plant will provide the benefits of operating efficiencies and increased water production capability for current residents, businesses, and industries, Greenville Mayor Alan Gaffner said. With the new Water Treatment Plant., Greenville is well-positioned for growth into the future." "We thank Congressman Shimkus for his support of the Rural Development Loan, Gaffner added. These types of programs prioritize and address the needs of rural communities. Jobs, economic development, and community life all have a relationship to a safe and high-quality water system." Shimkus also announced the Coles County Village of Ashemore will receive a low-interest loan of $320,000 to replace 10,631 linear feet of water main, service meters, fire hydrants, and related infrastructure. The EJ Water Cooperative will likewise receive a $180,000 low-interest loan to construct 49 miles of water main to serve residents ofSigel, Cumberland, and Claremont Townships in Shelby County. All three projects are being funded through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program at USDA. This week the Trump Administration announced a total of $891 million in grants through the program to help complete 220 projects in 43 states. "Upgrading water infrastructure provides a path to economic growth and protects the health and safety of people who live and work in rural areas, USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Bette Brand said.
