On September 7, 2017, Equifax announced hackers had stolen personal identifying information, including Social Security numbers, for approximately 145 million U.S. consumers. “An Arizonan whose name, address, and Social Security number was taken on Day 1 of the breach – under your watch – was left vulnerable and in the dark about the data breach for 117 days. That is disgraceful and unacceptable,” Sinema said to Smith. Sinema also highlighted the increasing need to pass her Senior Safe Act, bipartisan legislation that ensures financial institutions have the regulatory flexibility needed to report suspected instances of financial abuse of seniors.
