Soto Announces $5 million Grant to Hire Community Policing Officers in Central Florida 2017-11-30 2017 2017-11 Democrat House FL Darren Soto S001200 soto.house.gov soto https://soto.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper Kissimmee, Florida – U.S. Representative Darren Soto (FL-09) announced that the City of Orlando and Orange County will receive a total of $5 million in federal grants to strengthen its policing operations by hiring 40 additional law enforcement officers. The COPS Hiring Program (CHP) awards, administered by the Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office), aim to advance community policing by funding hiring, training, and providing technical assistance to all levels of law enforcement. "This CHP grant is critically important to ensure Central Florida's public safety. The City of Orlando and the Orange County Police Departments have been selected to receive federal funding to hire 40 additional officers, helping our local municipalities be adequately staffed, well trained, and better equipped to serve our community," stated Rep. Soto. "I'm proud to support federal grants benefiting our local agencies, and I'll continue working to make sure Central Florida has the federal resources necessary to thrive." The City of Orlando received $1,875,000 in funding to hire 15 new officers while the Orange County Sheriff's Office will receive $3,125,000 to bring in 25 new officers. According to the Department of Justice, the COPS Office has invested more than $14 billion to help advance community policing since 1994. For the 2017 cycle, the Attorney General announced $98 million in funding awards to 179 law enforcement agencies across the nation, which allows those agencies to hire 802 additional full-time law enforcement officers. Additional information about the 2017 COPS Hiring Program can be found on the COPS website at cops.usdoj.gov. 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-08T22:12:50Z
