Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) released the following statement after the House of Representatives censure vote: “Depictions and threats of violence against public officials—and especially against women and women of color—incite violence, threaten the safety of public officials and staff, and undermine our democratic institutions. Today, I joined colleagues in the House in voting to censure Representative Gosar, who used official House resources to release a video depicting the slaying of Representative Ocasio-Cortez and President Biden. Out of over 12,000 members of Congress who have served in this chamber in U.S. history, only a few hundred have been women. Threats and depictions of violence against women undermine our democracy and safety. That is why I voted to censure Representative Gosar’s actions and strip him of his committee positions. “New Mexicans elected me to Congress to represent and deliver results for our communities and to fight for a world that is more just, equitable, and safe. Representative Gosar’s actions, and those who refuse to hold him accountable, reflect a deeply troubling and dangerous trend that continues to endanger our democracy and its institutions.
