The National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) shows in New Mexico: There is a shortage of approximately 41,000 rental homes that are available and affordable to extremely low income (ELI) renters. 28% of renter households that are extremely low income 70% of extremely low-income renter households with severe cost burden In 2022, NLIHC data shows there were 68,160 ELI renter households in the state with only 27,270 affordable and available rental homes. CONGRESSWOMAN STANSBURY’S WORK ON FINDING HOUSING ACCESSIBILITY SOLUTIONS: Legislative Actions: The Congresswoman is working closely with local tribal leaders to address concerns regarding a lack of Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA) funding to tribal communities in the district. She is currently working on addressing these concerns by introducing legislation to create a separate stream of grant funding for tribal communities to build or rehabilitate existing homes with sustainable and resilient features.
