Stephanie Murphy nominated senior Olivia Carter to the U.S. service academy f t # e Washington, December 8, 2017 U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., today announced that Lake Brantley High School senior Olivia Carter has been accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Murphy nominated Carter to the prestigious service academy earlier this year. Carter will attend West Point starting in the summer of 2018. Upon graduation, she would be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. West Point is one of the nation’s five service academies—along with the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy—and ranks among the finest universities in the world.“Olivia is a young woman of character and commitment, and I know she will be a terrific cadet and an excellent officer. I’m proud to have nominated her, and I hope her acceptance will inspire other students from central Florida to consider applying to a service academy. Any interested student who lives in Florida’s Seventh Congressional District should contact my office for more information,” said Murphy, the only first-year Member of Congress who serves on West Point’s Board of Visitors. Carter has achieved academic and athletic excellence at Lake Brantley, where she maintains a 4.0 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society, and helped lead the girls’ varsity lacrosse team to three consecutive district championships. She is expected to become a member of West Point’s varsity lacrosse team.Admission to a U.S. service academy is highly competitive. All service academies, with the exception of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, generally require applicants to obtain a nomination from a Member of Congress or another authorized nominating source. The academies offer young men and women a tuition-free college education at a highly-ranked, nationally-recognized academic program, while preparing them for leadership roles in the U.S. Armed Forces or the Merchant Marines.
