Murphy requested the fact sheet in response to press reports detailing how displaced individuals from Puerto Rico were experiencing challenges obtaining health care services in Florida, despite the fact that they were enrolled in Medicaid or Medicare back in Puerto Rico.I am pleased that CMS prepared the fact sheet we requested, said Murphy. This fact sheet will provide clarity to displaced individuals trying to obtain health care services when they relocate to the states, whether on a temporary or permanent basis. The fact sheet will also provide important guidance to health care providers, insurers, and state and local government officials in Florida as they work to help displaced families. Murphy made the request in a November 15 letter, which she co-led with Florida Senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio and which was co-signed by nine bipartisan members of Floridas delegation in the U.S. House. Since Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico, over 230,000 individuals from the U.S. territory have arrived in Florida. Some are expected to return home to Puerto Rico when conditions improve, but many are expected to remain in Florida. Murphy has introduced two bills designed to help lower-income residents of Puerto Rico who relocate to Florida or another state to enroll in Medicaid through an expedited process, with the federal government temporarily paying the full cost of coverage. The CMS fact sheet is available on Murphys website here. CMS has advised Murphy that the document will soon be available on its website, in both English and Spanish. CMS has trained representatives at the 1-800-Medicare (1-800-633-4227) call center to answer questions in English or Spanish. ### U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy represents Floridas Seventh Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she serves on the House Armed Services Committee and Small Business Committee. The district includes all of Seminole County and much of northern Orange County, including downtown Orlando, Maitland, Winter Park, and the University of Central Florida. Previously, Murphy was a businesswoman and college instructor who also served as a national security specialist in the Office of the Secretary of Defense where she received numerous awards for her distinguished service, including the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service.
