Future Forum is an influential group of young Democratic Members of Congress in the U.S. House of Representativeswho advocate forissues and opportunities important to younger Americans. Founded in 2015 by U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., the organization's mission is to create and execute a federal policy agenda based on feedback received from young people at listening events across the country. The generational organization's membership will double in size toapproximately 50 membersin the new Congress and will continue to focus on issues like gun violence prevention, college affordability, andequality of opportunity. Murphy, unanimously elected by her colleagues, will lead Future Forum with support from its three newVice-Chairs: U.S. Representatives Antonio Delgado, D-N.Y.,Abby Finkenauer, D-Iowa, and Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif. Swalwell will serve asChairEmeritus. As we saw in Florida after the Parkland shooting,young Americans are demanding their voices be heard now more than ever and Congress should listen, Murphy said. I'm proud to lead this group ofpassionate youngleaders in Congress who will amplify the voices of younger Americansand provide them with a platformto shapethe future of ourgreatcountry. With millennials making up the largest generation in the American workforce and post-millennials becoming more engaged in our democracy, Future Forum will have an important role in this new Democratic majorityto steer our country in the right direction. I founded Future Forum in 2015 to give millennials a voice in Congress, Swalwell said. Decisions made in Washington today will affect young people for generations to come, and they deserve a seat at the table in Congress. With Congresswoman Murphy's thoughtful, energetic leadership, Future Forum will continue its innovative work listening to and engaging with young people to create a better, brighter future for us all. I'm excited to serve as a vice-chair of Future Forum and intend to focus on issues most important to young people, like loan forgiveness so they can pursue opportunities without burdensome student debt and helping our young farmers access land and capital, Delgado said. I will also use this role to facilitate conversations with young Americans and make sure their voices are heard by the people elected to represent them. Since its inception, Future Forum has visited47cities and met with thousands of young people wherethey live, work, and go to school. Murphy hosted Swalwell incentral Floridafor one such tour in 2017. As a result of these listening sessions,members of the group have introduced legislation to address issues such as student loan debt, health care affordability, and entrepreneurship. Pillars of Future Forum in the 116thCongress: Bridge the Divide Between Young Americans and their Government:Studies have shown that young Americans generally do not believe Congress represents the interests of people like them, which has contributed to widespread disengagement in ourdemocraticsystem. Future Forum will combat this perception by continuing its outreach to young Americans to better understand the issues that affect them and advance a policy agendainformed bytheir feedback. Engage and Empower Young Americans:Our democracy is not self-fulfilling, and its strength depends onengaged and informedcitizens. Future Forum will facilitate dialogues with young Americans about ways the federal government serves them on an individual and collective basis,and ways it can be improved. From basic services to sweeping federal programs, Future Forum will engage with young Americans to create awareness about what government can offer, why they should care, and how we can improve the relationship between elected officials and the younger constituents they represent. Inspire the Next Generation of Public Servants:The voices and talents of young Americans enrich our democratic process and can make government work more effectively. Future Forum will encourage more young Americans to serve their country, including by pursuing careers in public service.
