Steube Addresses Manasota Key Erosion in Meeting with Army Corps of Engineers Charlotte County, FL – U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-FL) yesterday joined Charlotte County leaders in a meeting and site visit with the Army Corps of Engineers and Colonel James L. Booth to discuss rehabilitation solutions for Manasota Key’s deteriorating shoreline. “In recent years, Charlotte County has sustained significant shoreline erosion and other damage from various weather events,” Steube said.”On Dec 1, 2021, I sent a letter to the Corps expressing my concern for these worsening conditions and have requested the inclusion of the study and construction of a shoreline rehabilitation project currently being considered by the Army Corps.” The federal project will help protect critical infrastructure, including homes, condos, and hurricane evacuation routes. Charlotte County has declared several emergencies since 2014 due to the impact of the erosion on homes and infrastructure. The erosion, in some cases, has destabilized homes and condominium buildings to the point where they are no longer safe to enter. The beaches within the project area begin in Sarasota County, and the project extends for over 4.4 miles across the Sarasota County/Charlotte County line south to Stump Pass Beach State Park. Florida’s 17th Congressional District’s land area is over 6,300 square miles and is home to portions of Florida’s Gulf Coast, including shoreline in Sarasota and Charlotte County.
