Susie Lee (Nev.-03) joined Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, Tribal leaders, and local community leaders to tour the proposed national monument site at Avi Kwa Ame. In January, Rep. Lee sent a letter to Sec. Haaland encouraging the administration to designate Avi Kwa Ame as a national monument and inviting her to tour the proposed monument site. "I want to thank Interior Secretary Deb Haaland for accepting my invitation and touring Avi Kwa Ame with me today," said Rep. Susie Lee. "This sensitive site holds such immense cultural, recreational, and ecological value. We were fortunate to be joined today by many Tribal leaders to discuss the need for this land to be designated a national monument, and had a productive discussion. I will continue to be a strong advocate for establishing Avi Kwa Ame as a national monument so that all our communities that hold this space dear can continue to conserve this sacred place for generations to come." In addition to Sec. Haaland, Rep. Lee was joined by Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Laura Daniel-Davis and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada State Director Jon Raby to meet with members of the Fort Mojave Tribal Council. During the visit, the group was able to see the biological diversity and discuss the rich cultural history of the site. Rep. Lee and Secretary Haaland also visited the BLM-managed Walking Box Ranch, the former home of silent movie stars Clara Bow and Rex Bell, where they met with local Tribal leaders, elected officials, and interested stakeholders to hear about their shared vision to conserve the ecological, cultural, historical, and natural integrity of the landscape for present and future generations.
