Additional co-signers of the letter include Reps. Joe Wilson (R-SC), Jim Costa (D-CA), Katie Porter (D-CA), Rudy Yakym (R-IN), Kelly Armstrong (R-ND), Thomas Kean (R-NJ), Bill Huizenga (R-MI), Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Brad Schneider (D-IL), Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Anthony D'Esposito (R-NY), and Randy Weber (R-TX). Earlier this year, Tenney led a bipartisan group of lawmakers in sending a similar letter to the Canadian government, calling for them to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization. The letter sent today reiterates the clear message from Rep. Tenney’s May letter and emphasizes the urgency to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization following Iran’s involvement in the funding, training, and support of the October 7th attack on Israel. Currently, Canada recognizes the IRGC Quds Force, one branch of the IRGC, as a terrorist entity but does not recognize the entire IRGC. “The October 7, 2023, terrorist massacre by Hamas killed Israeli, American, and Canadian citizens, and it was made possible by Iran and the IRGC, which have supported Canadian-designated Palestinian terror groups such as Hamas with arms, training, and hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for years. In the wake of the horrific bloodshed of October 7, a senior IRGC official heralded the gruesome terrorist operation as ‘the greatest success of the Islamic world.’ In both words and deeds, the IRGC as an entity is ideologically committed to destroying Israel and undermining U.S.-Canadian security interests in the Middle East and around the world. The IRGC means what it says, and neither engagement nor concessions will change this underlying reality,” the lawmakers wrote. The lawmakers continued, “As the United States has clearly demonstrated across both Republican and Democratic administrations, an IRGC terrorist designation can be practically implemented without unintended secondary impacts. By officially designating the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organization, Canada can join the United States in once again contributing to the global fight against terrorism, demonstrating a strong commitment to ensuring peace and stability.” Read the full text of the letter here.
