https://titus.house.gov/press-releases/rep-titus-to-commemorate-26th-anniversary-of-the-ada-with-disabled-nevadans Rep. Titus to Commemorate 26th Anniversary of the ADA with Disabled Nevadans 2016-07-21 2016 2016-07 Democrat House NV Dina Titus T000468 titus.house.gov     legacy July 21, 2016 Contact: Kyle Roerink Phone: 202-657-3219 Las Vegas – Today Rep. Dina Titus of Nevada’s First Congressional District will commemorate the 26th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act at the Dina Titus Estates, an affordable housing complex for Nevadans who are wheelchair-bound or suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The facility is named in Rep. Titus’ honor to commemorate her decades of advocacy on behalf of Nevada’s most vulnerable residents. The Congresswoman will be joined by residents and Dan Billmark, Director of Real Estate Development at Accessible Space, the non-profit that operates the complex. Attendees will have the opportunity to sign a pledge encouraging our nation to come into full compliance with the law.  “On the 26th anniversary of the ADA, it is important to remember that some of the nation’s most vulnerable people still face discrimination and hardships solely because they are living with disabilities,” Rep. Titus said. “As a nation, we must use this day to say, ‘We’re better than that.’ Today’s historic milestone gives us an opportunity to commemorate passage of this landmark legislation while vowing to make sure that more people have access to jobs, transportation, government services, and telecommunications. When everyone has an opportunity to achieve his or her potential, the entire community is better served.”  ADA History On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure the civil rights of people with disabilities. This legislation established a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities.  The ADA has expanded opportunities for Americans with disabilities by reducing barriers, changing perceptions, and increasing full participation in community life. However, the full promise of the ADA will only be reached if we remain committed to continue our efforts to fully implement the ADA. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. The ADA is divided into five titles (or sections) that relate to different areas of public life, including: employment, public services, public accommodations, telecommunications, and transportation. But more must be done to guarantee full and comprehensive implementation of this law across the country.  Event Details    Where:   The Dina Titus Estates  5050 Missouri Avenue Las Vegas, NV 89122 When:  2:00 pm PST Date: Today, July 21, 2016 Other: The Congresswoman will meet with residents and commemorate the anniversary with refreshments. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
