(December 7, 2017)—Congressman Tom Garrett is pleased to announce the district-wide winner of the Congressional App Challenge, a competition aimed at encouraging students to learn how to code by creating their own app. Covenant Christian Academy student Conlan Rupp, of South Riding, won the VA-05 title for his app, Astounding Air Hockey, an air hockey game for children of all ages. “My app was created with my fellow classmates in mind,” explained Rupp in his app submission. “What my app is trying to accomplish is to bring my classmates together around the love of hockey,” said Rupp. “The future of our economy depends on our ability to educate students in STEM fields. With exposure to these types of careers early on, kids like Conlan will go on to develop the disruptive technologies of tomorrow,” said Garrett, who congratulated Conlan while giving he and his family a tour of the U.S. Capitol, including stops in the Rotunda, the Speaker’s Balcony and the Floor of the House. “I am particularly impressed at how Conlan used technology to create such an enjoyable app to share with his family and friends, and I will continue to support initiatives that inspire young people to pursue a STEM career.” “We are so proud of Conlan for this exciting accomplishment,” said Chris Rupp, Conlan’s father. “At Covenant Christian Academy, students are introduced to computer science at a young age so that they can excel in STEM fields throughout life. My hope is that Conlan’s hard work and commitment to computer science will inspire his classmates and peers, and make the whole South Riding community proud.” For his hard work, Conlan will receive $250 in Amazon Web Services Credits from the Congressional App Challenge, and was presented with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in person by Congressman Garrett.
