As we look forward to 2020, I voted today to make sure New Mexican families, veterans, and businesses are provided with the support they deserve to build a brighter future in our state. From increased funding to fix strained roads in the southeast to ensuring our communities are prepared for the upcoming Census, today's funding package meets many of our needs. While this bill isn't perfect, as few are, it provides stability for our federal government and the thousands of New Mexicans who rely on its services, said Torres Small. Specifically, the FY2020 appropriations packages included: $1 billion for the BUILD/TIGER program to help communities like southeastern New Mexico to make transformative investments in their surface transportation infrastructure that address congestion, improve safety, create jobs, and expand economic opportunities. $81 billion for the Veterans Administration to provide healthcare for veterans, including funds to address the veteran suicide epidemic and serve homeless veterans. $1.1 billion to enhance access to VA services for veterans living in rural and remote areas through telehealth initiatives. $300 million for rural health programs for veterans to connect with the healthcare they have earned with their service. $944 million for programs to improve maternal and child health, including an additional $5 million to reduce maternal mortality. $502.5 million for grants provided by the Office on Violence Against Women to combat domestic violence. $7.6 billion for the Census, ensuring an accurate count for the decennial census. $60 million increase for the Land Water Conservation Fund, for a total of $495 million, for critical conservation program that benefits sites across New Mexico. $6.047 billion for the Indian Health Service, which works to better the health of New Mexico's tribes and pueblos. $3.223 billion for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for public safety programs, including investments to address the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, and funds new tribal school construction. $16.3 billion for the Title I-A program, which is the heart of the federal effort to help schools provide high-quality education to all students, including students who need special education services. $425 million for Election Security grants to continue to help states upgrade election technology, improve cybersecurity, and help prevent future cyberattacks. The appropriations packages also included important measures important to rural New Mexican communities and small businesses such as the implementation of the SECURE Act, which establishes retirement accounts for small businesses. SECURE Act: The appropriations bill package contains several provisions intended to encourage retirement security in the workplace, including small businesses like those serving southern New Mexico. FUNDING FOR RURAL SCHOOLS: Extends two years of funding for the Secure Rural Schools program, which provides funding for rural counties that are struggling to fund essential services due to declining revenues from federal lands.
