As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I have long supported U.S. adherence to the Geneva Conventions and our commitment to human rights during American military campaigns. “As the President has stated, Bush-era CIA interrogation techniques did significant damage to America’s standing in the world and made it more difficult to achieve U.S. objectives with long-time allies and partners. Importantly, the report exposes that these techniques were ineffective in providing actionable, or useable intelligence. In the fight against extremism, the United States must be the example, not an exception, which is why in 2009 the use of torture was appropriately brought to an end. “Congress must utilize its oversight role to ensure transparency in future intelligence actions and to ensure that they conform with domestic and international law. Our nation has persevered through countless struggles and we have done so by protecting – not rejecting - the freedoms that make this country great.
