Congresswoman Niki Tsongas (MA-3) discussed the need to hold the EPA accountable for this incident, as well as the urgency of addressing the tens of thousands of other abandoned mine sites across our country that continuously pollute our rivers. Congresswoman Tsongas is a co-sponsor of Rep. Raul Grijalva (AZ-3) legislation to bring the 1872 Mining Law into the modern age, which would address the problem of abandoned mines and help prevent future spills. The bill would require companies to pay royalties to the American taxpayers for metals extracted from our public lands, and create a much needed funding source for cleanups of old and abandoned hardrock mines. The legislation also includes a "Good Samaritan provision which would make it easier for third-parties to clean up abandoned mine sites in their communities. Congresswoman Tsongas is the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Federal Lands Subcommittee.
