The $73,769 grant award will be used to provide silica training to 350 workers and employers in the Northwest Indiana construction industry. The training will address the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and protection from respirable crystalline silica and will target youth employees and small business employers in the construction industry. According to OSHA, respirable crystalline silica is created with cutting, sawing, or crushing stone, rock, concrete, and mortar, and inhaling these very small crystalline silica particles puts workers at increased risk of developing serious diseases, including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, silicosis, and kidney disease. Congressman Pete Visclosky stated, The Construction Advancement Foundation of Northwest Indiana is a critical resource for training workers in our region and promoting best workplace safety practices. I commend Mr. Pearman and everyone at the Foundation for successfully identifying and obtaining this federal resource that will allow them to further enhance their excellent work. Executive Director of the Construction Advancement Foundation Dewey Pearman stated, Our commitment to workplace safety is a reflection of that of the contractors and the building trades unions of Northwest Indiana. The Susan Harwood grant award will allow us to create a safer workplace for the working men and women in the Northwest Indiana trades. We very much appreciate the assistance of Congressman Visclosky's office in securing the grant.
