Specifically, BakerTechnical Institute in Baker Citywill receive $500,000, Harney County will receive $600,000, and TheDalleswill receive $600,000. In 2018, Walden led the effort to reauthorize the Brownfields program. The funding is welcome news forBaker City, TheDallesand Harney County.In 2018, I led Congressional efforts to reauthorizeand expandthe Brownfields programtoprovide communitieslike thesewith the resources needed to clean up and redevelop old industrial sites. I appreciate EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler for recognizing the need for economic development in our rural communities and providing funding to these projects.Thesefundswill help to facilitate job growth and wage increases; promote the development of new infrastructure; and improve and protect the environment. Since the program's inception, thousands of contaminated sites have been remediatedand hundreds of thousands of jobs have been saved. As our nation works to combat the coronavirus,providing opportunities forfutureeconomic growthin our communities is more important than ever,said Walden. Oregon had beenparticularly successful using the Brownfields Program to put old industrial sites backintoproductive service.One of Oregon's most successful Brownfields projects isthe Old Mill District in Bend.Another successful project occurred inTheDalles,whereGoogle broke ground on an expansion to their data center on 26 acres of former mill land that was cleaned up under this program. Brownfields sites are often abandoned, closed or under-utilized industrial or commercial facilities. Examples of these include abandoned factories, closed lumber mills, a closed commercial building or warehouse, or a former dry-cleaning establishment or gas station.
