The small ceremony of Lawson’s family and friends was held Friday, December 9th at the Rockingham County Economic Development Center in Wentworth. “Our veterans put their lives on the line to protect our God given right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” Walker said. “In 1943, at the young age of 18, Harry Lawson enlisted in the U.S. Army during one of the darkest chapters in world history. This flag, which he fought honorably to protect, is just a small token of our appreciation for his service and sacrifice,” Walker added. Harry Lawson enlisted June 23, 1943 in Roanoke, Virginia. He began his service with Battery D 5th Anti-Aircraft Training Battalion out of Fort Eustis, Virginia. He was reassigned to the 102nd Infantry Regiment in Operation in Hawaii. He was honorably discharged as an Army Corporal February 1946. Lawson returned to Eden, NC, and worked for Tri City Ford and Duke Power. He married Betty Carter in 1950. They have four children, eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.
